Said Nigel Quinton: "Libdem success both ends of the constituency - Liberal democrats took control of St Albans City & District Council last night, and in North Herts became the official opposition on a spectacularly bad night for Labour. - Full results digest will follow"

North Herts District Council Liberal Democrats repelled a strong Tory challenge In Hitchin Highbury, Chesfield and Baldock East on Thursday and as a result are now the main party of opposition to the high cost Tory Council.

The results in Highbury, Chesfield and Baldock are a very strong testament to the hard work done by the Councillors in the Ward, Clare Body, Lee Downie and Marilyn Kirkland have worked all year round with local residents to ensure their concerns and problems are addressed along with their fellow Lib Dem Councillors on NHDC.

That is why the residents of these areas went out at the elections and supported these 3 fine Councillors and had the confidence to return them to serve them for a further 4 years, despite the Conservatives throwing everything at these wards in their desperation to remove these excellent Lib Dem Councillors.

In these days when Labour and Conservatives are almost indivisible on policy, it is the Liberal Democrats who offer the only real alternative - FREER, FAIRER AND GREENER.

The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.

The boring truth about council tax rises

Fri 25th Apr 2008

Tory councillor Julian Daly may have had some electoral fun and games with residents' council tax demands but he perhaps should have spoken to the council officers to get his facts straight before talking to the press. In contrast, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate Nigel Quinton has been busy getting to the bottom of the issue once Harpenden residents had contacted him concerned about the size of their council tax bill.

Herts could lose out on £100million

Wed 2nd Apr 2008

Hertfordshire is faced with around 83,000 new homes being built, if the government confirms the numbers in the draft East of England plan. This will place a massive strain on the county and homebuilders will in future have to pay a tariff for each new home, to meet some of the infrastructure costs.

Quotes of the Week

"Liberalism in Britain has lost a great champion, the Liberal Democrats, a great advocate and our public life, a great servant."

Lord Paddy Ashdown

In memory of Lord Richard Holme, who died on 5 May

"If the Tories want to claim that they are going to cut corporation tax, they have to come clean about how they are going to pay for it. Cutting the main rate of corporation tax to 25% will cost more than £5bn a year. If David Cameron is to have a hope of sounding credible he must state clearly where the money will come from. Otherwise this will be seen as yet another unfunded tax cut."
